First Grade

ONUS Scholars First Grade is the advanced first-grade year, built as a full 36 instructional weeks across four nine-week quarters, five days a week, with each day running about three hours. By Week 36 your child reads independently, writes across five genres, computes fluently within 100, knows all seven continents and five oceans, and can present their own capstone project to family.

The year is built on the ONUS five-method blend — Montessori as the daily backbone (the work cycle, sandpaper letters, practical life), Singapore Math’s Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression with bar models and number bonds, Reggio Emilia’s child-as-researcher running a full inquiry cycle in a year-long nature journal, Waldorf’s in-breath/out-breath daily and seasonal rhythm with arts woven throughout, and World Book scope-and-sequence alignment. The year moves as a single arc through four themed quarters — Roots, Branches, Bloom, and Harvest — from foundations through fluency to depth and a capstone, with Geography present every week from Week 1.

First Grade objective

Counts and writes to 100 with place value to tens and ones; knows number bonds to 20 fluently; adds and subtracts within 20 by strategy; adds and subtracts two-digit numbers with the regrouping concept introduced concretely; identifies and counts coins to $1; tells time to the hour and half-hour; works with concrete halves and quarters; solves one-step word problems with bar models; previews equal-groups multiplication.

Writing

From letter formation to long-form composition, step by step.

First Grade objective

Writes complete sentences and a five-plus-sentence personal narrative independently, plus an informational paragraph, an opinion paragraph, a five-step how-to, a friendly letter, and a research mini-report with a simple bibliography — editing each with a checklist.

Science

Reggio-style investigations the child documents themselves.

First Grade objective

Keeps a weekly nature journal and completes the full inquiry cycle on six-plus investigations across matter, force and motion, magnets, plant and animal life cycles, habitats, weather, the water cycle, and light and shadow (NGSS 1-PS4, 1-LS1, 1-LS3, 1-ESS1).

Geography & Social Studies

Mapwork, community, and the wider world as field study.

First Grade objective

States a full address; reads a compass rose and map key; names all seven continents and five oceans; locates own city, state, and country; studies habitats, community helpers, national symbols, and the figures of Washington, Lincoln, and Dr. King; distinguishes rules from laws.

Arts

Seasonal Waldorf art — watercolor, form drawing, handwork.

First Grade objective

Keeps observation drawings all year; demonstrates wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet watercolor; mixes secondary colors with intention; completes a 3D clay form and one portfolio project per quarter, ending with a capstone art piece.

Music

Singing, recorder, and rhythm woven through the week.

First Grade objective

Holds a steady beat; reads quarter and half notes and rests; plays B-A-G on the recorder; performs two-plus songs at family concerts; composes a four-beat rhythm pattern.

SEL

Social-emotional learning built into circle time and reflection.

First Grade objective

Names eight-plus feelings and their body sensations; uses three-plus calming strategies; practices listening and turn-taking; completes an act of service; and writes a sealed letter to a future self, opened at year’s end.

Practical Life

Manages an independent work cycle; demonstrates pouring, polishing, sewing, folding, and food prep; cooks a simple meal end-to-end; cares for a plant for a quarter; and hosts the capstone celebration.
