2026 – 2027 Cycle
Fourth Grade
Ages 9 – 10
ONUS Scholars Fourth Grade is the year the child becomes a confident scholar, built as a full 36 instructional weeks across four nine-week quarters, five days a week, with each day running about four and a half hours. Multi-paragraph essays in four types become routine, multi-digit math reaches 4-digit × 2-digit and long division of 4-digit numbers, and fraction and decimal operations all enter — while United States history is studied in depth from the regions and Native nations through westward expansion, ending with a paired capstone research project and creative product presented to family.
The year is built on the ONUS five-method blend — Montessori as the daily backbone (the work cycle, three-period lessons, practical life), Singapore Math’s Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression through fractions and decimals, Reggio Emilia’s child-as-researcher with primary sources and a year-long nature journal, Waldorf’s in-breath/out-breath daily and seasonal rhythm with arts woven throughout, and World Book scope-and-sequence alignment. The year moves through four themed quarters — Atlas, Ancestors, Frontier, and Homeland — from the US regions through indigenous history and westward expansion to a My Region capstone, with Geography present every week from Week 1.
What your child will achieve
Nine strands, one year of growth.
Phonics & Reading
Daily decoding, fluency, and read-aloud, paced to the grade.
Reads about 800 high-frequency words; decodes complex words via roots, affixes, and morphology; reads independently 60+ minutes daily; reads primary sources; identifies point of view, theme, and tone; synthesizes four-plus sources; distinguishes fact, opinion, and bias; and cites sources in MLA.
Mathematics
Singapore CPA progression — concrete to pictorial to abstract.
Place value to millions; multi-digit multiplication to 4-digit × 2-digit and long division to 4-digit ÷ 2-digit; equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, fraction × fraction and ÷ fraction; decimal place value and all four operations; factors, multiples, and prime numbers; angles, symmetry, and number patterns.
Writing
From letter formation to long-form composition, step by step.
Writes the five-paragraph essay in all four types (narrative, expository, persuasive, descriptive); writes an argumentative essay with counter-claim refutation; a research paper with primary and secondary sources in MLA; and a paired capstone research project and creative product.
Science
Reggio-style investigations the child documents themselves.
Conducts independent investigations with controls and variables; studies energy, waves, and information transfer; structures that support survival; and Earth’s features, weathering, erosion, and natural resources (NGSS 4-PS3, 4-PS4, 4-LS1, 4-ESS1, 4-ESS2, 4-ESS3).
Geography & Social Studies
Mapwork, community, and the wider world as field study.
Knows all 50 states, capitals, seven regions, DC, and territories; studies ten Native American culture areas and major nations; Indian Removal, the Trail of Tears, and treaties; European exploration, the 13 colonies, Louisiana Purchase, Oregon Trail, Texas, the Gold Rush, and the transcontinental railroad.
Arts
Seasonal Waldorf art — watercolor, form drawing, handwork.
Keeps year-long observation drawings; deepens color theory and pen-and-ink; demonstrates wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor; creates regional American and Native art forms with cultural respect; and completes a capstone creative product.
Music
Singing, recorder, and rhythm woven through the week.
Reads music on the staff (treble with bass introduced); plays recorder across the full octave; composes a sixteen-bar piece; reads time signatures and dotted notes; and performs American regional and Native folk music at four family concerts.
SEL
Social-emotional learning built into circle time and reflection.
Names complex feelings; engages civically with democracy, sovereignty, and treaty obligations; sits with painful history; steel-mans opposing arguments; practices cultural humility and land acknowledgment; and receives feedback as a gift.
Practical Life
Montessori care of self and environment — the work that grounds the day.
Cooks regional meals independently; joins a family budget conversation; conducts a real interview as a primary source; reads historical, treaty, and topographic maps; builds simple machines; manages time with priorities; and hosts the capstone celebration.
How the five methods show up here
Five lineages, each week.
Montessori
The work cycle, three-period lessons, and practical life anchor concentration and self-paced scholarship every single day.
Singapore Math
Every concept moves Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract — area models and fraction tiles before standard algorithms for multi-digit, fraction, and decimal operations.
Reggio Emilia
History and science unfold as documented research from primary sources, with a real interview and a year-long nature journal.
Waldorf
An in-breath/out-breath daily rhythm — focused work interleaved with movement, regional arts, music, and handwork on a seasonal cadence.
World Book
Every strand cross-checked against grade-level benchmarks, confirming the child meets or exceeds fourth-grade standards with added depth.
The year at a glance
Four quarters, one rising arc.
| Quarter | Weeks | Name | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 1–9 | Atlas | US regions and 50 states; place value to millions, multi-digit multiplication and division; four essay types. |
| Q2 | 10–18 | Ancestors | Native nations and indigenous history; fractions, mixed numbers, fraction operations; geometry begins. |
| Q3 | 19–27 | Frontier | Exploration and westward expansion; decimals all operations, angles and symmetry; primary-source method. |
| Q4 | 28–36 | Homeland | My Region capstone (research + creative); factors, patterns, multi-step problems; synthesis and celebration. |
Portfolio and family-showcase weeks fall at Weeks 9, 18, 27, and 36 — the final weeks build and present a paired capstone research project and creative product, closing with a year-end celebration.
