Fifth Grade

ONUS Scholars Fifth Grade walks American history from Pre-Columbian North America through Reconstruction, built as a full 36 instructional weeks across four nine-week quarters, five days a week, with each day running about five hours. Math covers the full Grade 5 sequence — decimals, fractions, volume, the coordinate plane, and expressions — literary analysis becomes routine across four era-aligned novels, and the year ends with a bound capstone research paper paired with a multimedia product on a chosen topic in American history, presented to family.

The year is built on the ONUS five-method blend — Montessori as the daily backbone (the work cycle, independent scholarship, practical life), Singapore Math’s Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression through decimals and fractions, Reggio Emilia’s child-as-researcher working from primary sources and a real interview, Waldorf’s in-breath/out-breath daily and seasonal rhythm with arts woven throughout, and World Book scope-and-sequence alignment. Writes the five-paragraph essay with thesis, counterpoint, and conclusion; literary-analysis and argumentative essays with counterclaim refutation; a research paper with primary and secondary sources in full MLA; and a multimedia capstone — documentary, podcast, slideshow, or website.

Science

Reggio-style investigations the child documents themselves.

Fifth Grade objective

Conducts investigations with controls, variables, and replication; studies the particle model and conservation of matter, gravity and energy from the sun, plants building matter from air and water, Earth’s spheres, water distribution, and sky patterns (NGSS 5-PS1, 5-PS2, 5-PS3, 5-LS1, 5-LS2, 5-ESS1, 5-ESS2, 5-ESS3).

Geography & Social Studies

Mapwork, community, and the wider world as field study.

Studies Pre-Columbian civilizations, the Columbian Exchange, the 13 colonies in depth, the American Revolution and the Constitution, the early republic, the Louisiana Purchase, Jacksonian era and Indian removal, reform movements, Manifest Destiny, the sectional crisis, the Civil War, and Reconstruction through 1877.
